Soundbyte button6/22/2023 ![]() Up to an eight-voice unison can be dialed in, detuned and spread across the width of the stereo field. Over towards the right are more controls that let you adjust oscillator sync (which doesn’t use a second osc for sync) and adjust the pulse width. When you use that last setting, each time a note is played it will be either in phase or slightly out of phase. ![]() The last two settings in this section are for phase offset and the other is for a random phase amount. The controls include amplitude, tuning (semitones and cents), harmonic (multiplies the frequency) and shift (bipolar tuning expressed in Hz). It has the basic waveforms of sawtooth, pulse, triangle and sine. The first sound generator we’ll look at is the analog oscillator. A menu will appear giving you the choices that can be added, including sound generators, effects (such as filter and distortion), and utilities for output and grouping, etc. These can be added to an empty Init patch by clicking in the generator area towards the top. As you’re working on designing your sound, you can use Undo and Redo buttons next to the name field, and you can click the Clear button to start over from Init settings.Īs mentioned earlier, there are several types of sound generation. Once you’re done using the browser you just click in the name field once again to close it. There is no Favorites functionality here, but it’s possible to add a new folder called Favorites (or something similar) and then save certain presets to that directory. Any presets you put together yourself and save will go into the User Presets folder. Each preset name is displayed along with a description of the sound it makes and/or useful tips for playing the preset. This will open a browser with the categories along the left side and the presets in the middle section. Of course, you could skim through the many included presets by clicking on the name field at the top of Phase Plant. Once loaded in your DAW you’ll be presented with an Init patch which consists of … nothing! It is a blank slate from which you can build your first sound totally from scratch. There is no standalone version so you’ll need a DAW capable of supporting VST2, AAX or Audio Unit formats. ![]() To install Phase Plant you’ll need at least a 2 GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM and a PC with Windows 7 (or higher) or a Mac with OS X 10.7 or higher. Topping it all off is a three lane effects section. Eight macros are available, and nearly everything in Phase Plant can be routed however you want. In the modulation area you can add your envelopes and LFOs as well as set up channel pressure, velocity settings and much more. Since there is a filter module and a distortion module in the generator section, these can also be used at audio rate modulation (as source or a target). FM can be set up with any of the types of signal generation (not just analog) with audio rate modulation. The generators and filters can be configured in various groups. Kilohearts has also included plentiful samples in various categories that are ready to use. There are many wavetables already included and Phase Plant has its own wavetable editor. Phase Plant is a synth/sample-player plugin that can be as simple or as complex as you’d like, with a generator section that includes several types of sound generation including analog, wavetable, sample player and noise. I particularly wanted to mention the snapins since Kilohearts’ powerful new synth/sampler, Phase Plant, which is being reviewed here, can use the snapins as well. They have all the others listed on their website. A few of these snapins include 3-band EQ, distortion, limiter and ladder filter. They can also be loaded as a standard plugin in your DAW. Snapins are much like standard plugins but they can be loaded into their hosting products SnapHeap and MultiPass. Kilohearts is the software developer behind the virtual analog synth plugin ONE and they’ve created many other plugins and snapins. We think you’ll find that using it is … ahem … a snap. Check out this new powerful synth/sample-player from Kilohearts that has enormous potential.
